Glass banisters are a popular feature in contemporary homes, allowing light to pass throughout the stairwell whilst providing edge protection in an architecturally pleasing design. 

According to British building standards and BSI 6180:2011 edge protection is required in domestic buildings where a drop of 600mm or more exists, and the edge protection should satisfy 0.74kN force loading. Therefore interior staircases will always require edge protection of some kind that can meet this force loading criteria, which can be anything from a simple post and rail system right up to a stunning frameless glass banister.
